It is important to know whether your vehicle is financially protected should you experience a breakdown. Car repair costs can be very hefty, especially if a critical component malfunctions.

What is a factory warranty?

A factory warranty (also known as a “manufacturer’s warranty” or a “new vehicle warranty”) is a financial protection product that covers the expensive repair costs that can arise when a vehicle breaks down.

Typically, when a new vehicle is purchased from a dealership, it will immediately be covered by a factory warranty. However, the length of the contract and the level of protection offered will depend on which brand, or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) the vehicle was purchased from.

Something to note is that the warranty that comes with the vehicle might not protect you to the same extent as time goes on. This is why you might have heard of terms like “bumper-to-bumper warranty” or “powertrain warranty”. It’s important that we explain these warranty concepts to you first, so you can understand what type of coverage your vehicle may have at this point in time.

What is a bumper-to-bumper warranty?

If you’ve already done some research into car warranties, chances are you’ve also come across the term “bumper-to-bumper warranty,” also known as a “basic warranty”. A bumper-to-bumper warranty is the most comprehensive type of warranty because it covers every possible failure that your vehicle may experience from the front bumper to the rear bumper.

Because they’re highly comprehensive, bumper-to-bumper warranties are typically only available for new vehicles.

What is a powertrain warranty?

After the bumper-to-bumper warranty has expired, the car will still be protected but with less coverage. This is called the ‘powertrain warranty,’ and it helps drivers cover the cost of powertrain repairs. The powertrain warranty protects the essential components that help a car get from point A to point B.

A powertrain warranty usually covers engine, turbo/supercharger, transfer case, front and rear axles, and can include some electric/hybrid components.
